As I mentioned back in an August blog, I have been getting more active in fighting climate change this year — attending the Climate Reality Leadership Training, joining Citizens Climate Lobby, regularly contacting my Congresspeople about the issue, giving presentations to church and other community groups throughout Southeast Michigan, etc.

Well, I’m not the only one who has become activated to save the planet!  Here are some upcoming activities and events you can join to find out more about climate change and learn how you can get involved:

A Carbon “Price is Right”

Harnessing the Market to Drive Down Carbon Emissions

Wednesday, February 7, 7 pm

Ann Arbor District Library, Downtown Branch

Pricing carbon is viewed by economists left, right and center as the simplest and most effective way to reduce carbon emissions. Momentum is growing: Carbon fee and dividend (CFD) and cap and trade policies are currently used, or are planned, in many parts of the world. How do they work? How might they affect the poor, and our economy in general? This panel will explore the challenges and opportunities of market-driven strategies to address the climate crisis.
Moderator: Dr. Knute Nadelhoffer (University of Michigan)
Panelists: Dr. Barry Rabe (University of Michigan), Dr. Sam Stolper (University of Michigan), Dr. Lisa Del Buono (Citizens’ Climate Lobby)

This event is co-sponsored by the City of Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor League of Women Voters, the Ann Arbor District Library, the UM School of Environment and Sustainability, UM Energy Institute and the Ann Arbor Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby.

New Climate Reality Washtenaw County Chapter!

Interested in fighting Climate Change?  Consider joining our chapter!  We are in the first stages of forming our group.  Email me at kolsson@hrwc.org if you are interested.

Citizens Climate Lobby  – Ann Arbor Chapter

Those specially interested in promoting legislation that would put a price on carbon, I highly encourage you to check out CCL.  This was my first act after attending the Climate Reality Training in Denver in March, 2017.  This is a very well organized group.  They make it very easy to learn more about them on their national web site, and to learn about citizen lobbying.  They provide many ways for participating in their highly focused goal, from entering data, to making phone calls to giving presentations to actually lobbying your congressperson in D.C.!

Climate Presentations

Invite me to speak at your next community meeting or event!

This past March I joined the thousands of volunteers in 135 countries who have been personally trained by former Vice President Al Gore to educate the public about climate change. I traveled to Denver Colorado for “Climate Reality Leader Training” from the Climate Reality Project. There I learned that while the scale of the problem is monumental, the opportunities to fix the problem are tremendous, with renewable energy costs plummeting and capacity skyrocketing. U.S. states and cities and many countries are already turning to solar, wind, and energy conservation at record rates.

I would love the opportunity to share what I have learned throughout the Huron River watershed! I am available to give the famous Al Gore slide presentation (there are long and short versions) to town halls, club meetings, school groups, or any kind of event or gathering. I can customize the presentation to fit your timing.

To schedule a talk please call or email me, Kris Olsson, at (734) 769-5123 x 607.
