Increasing HRWC’s capacity and programmatic success
What an amazingly productive summer! HRWC’s summer interns joined us from a broader set of schools than most summers including Bowdoin, Carleton, and Kalamazoo colleges; DePaul, Eastern Michigan, Grand Valley State, Michigan State, and Wayne State universities; University of Michigan; Washtenaw Community College; and Community (Ann Arbor), Dexter, and Greenhills high schools.
These fabulous students contributed to all aspects of our summer programming and data collection. This included our STEM education events—streamside water quality monitoring as well as educational enrichment activities with YMCA and Parkridge Community Center summer camps. Students also monitored and maintained green infrastructure with the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office, the Village of Pinckney and the City of Wixom. They supported our twenty-year-old Chemistry and Flow Monitoring Program more than in previous years. And they played a pivotal role in accomplishing the mussel survey, which nearly doubled HRWC’s field work this year. All of us at HRWC are grateful for these dedicated young professionals and we are excited to see where their future education and careers take them!
