Earth Day 50th anniversaryThis week the University of Michigan is hosting: Rise up for the Environment, a Commemorative Week of Action. Starting today and through March 14th, there are many amazing events and seminars happening in and around the Ann Arbor area. Several are being offered with remote participation options. There will be no shortage of opportunities to learn from people of local, national, and international renown on the environmental issues of our time. Water and climate change are major themes.

A few places I plan to be:

  1. This year’s Wege Lecture includes a presentation by Philippe Cousteau, Jr. will and followed by the Rise Up for the Environment Rally with speakers including Naomi Klein and Mustafa Santiago Ali. Thursday, March 12, 2020, 5:30 pm – 8 pm, Hill Auditorium, UM, Ann Arbor. (free event, ticket required)
  2. A common question I hear from watershed municipalities is, “what can we do to contribute to solutions to climate change?” This workshop addresses this question: Picking collaboration over fighting: Climate Change & the Natural and the Built Environment. This event is being offered as a “teach out” which means you can attend remotely March 11, 2020, 12 to 2 pm (join here)
  3. A concept we are hearing more about in water management is “one water”. It involves looking across all water systems- stormwater, wastewater and drinking water — for a more holistic view. Learn more about this new paradigm at Achieving One Water and the Circular Economy. March 10, 2020 from 10 am to noon at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library, Conference Room, Ann Arbor.
  4. HRWC staff and Climate Reality Leader, Kris Olsson will be speaking on Climate Change in the Great Lakes as part of her efforts with the Washtenaw Chapter of the Climate Reality Project. Saturday, March 14, 2020, 1:30 – 3 pm, Ecology Center, Ann Arbor. (free event, RSVP here)
