Removing the Mill Pond Dam and Restoring Mill Creek

From 2000 to 2008, HRWC worked with the Village of Dexter and other parties to identify a workable solution for the community that would connect the community to Mill Creek, the largest tributary to the Huron, and improve the ecology and economy of downtown Dexter. The story of the Mill Pond dam’s removal in July 2008 is told in the Huron River Report. Since the dam’s removal, the Village has capitalized on the restored creek by creating a waterfront park with non-motorized trails that will connect to the Washtenaw County Border to Border trail, and connect the Village businesses to recreation users of the Huron River Greenway and Water Trail. Removing the dam  has opened up stream habitat to fish populations and added a challenging whitewater kayaking feature in Southeast Michigan.
