Huron River Clean Up

MAKE A DIFFERENCE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9

Please set aside this day to help the river you love,  to collect trash, meet and greet, trade stories and information, and generally enjoy an early fall day together.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS…

Pick a section of the river. Start whenever you like, work in a team or alone, with a canoe/boat or on foot (waders generally preferred) and some heavy duty trash bags and gloves.Bring your collected trash to Dexter Huron Metropark East Pavilion and, we’ve arranged for its disposal.

Huron River Watershed Council will be at the Dexter Huron Metropark East Pavilion, starting at 10 a.m.and will provide heavy duty plastic bags and 15 grabbers that are available on a first come first serve basis. Hot coffee and doughnuts will also be available. Please email  Margaret Smith at HRWC to register for the clean-up at msmith@hrwc.org

(Margaret’s cell phone for use on clean up day is 248-914-1713)

If you have your own watercraft: Bring your collected trash to Dexter Huron Metropark East Pavilion between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. because we’ve arranged for its disposal. Tell the gate receptionist that you are participating in the Huron River Cleanup Day and you will be admitted to the park free of charge. Remember to log your collection with the volunteer.

If you need watercraft: For those needing canoes, Skip’s Canoe Livery has offered to donate 15 canoes for people wishing to clean up the river between Hudson Mills and Dexter Huron Metroparks.  Canoe requests must be made by October 6th to msmith@hrwc.org Meet at Dexter Huron at 10 a.m. and you will be shuttled to Hudson Mills where you will launch, work cleaning that section and deposit your collected trash at Dexter Huron.

HELPFUL HINTS: Cleanup volunteers need to provide their own gear to collect the river trash.  Although HRWC has some trash bags and gloves and grabbers they are limited. It helps if you have your own gear.

Some helpful items to bring along are:

  • Waders, aqua shoes, sunscreen, canoe, kayak, life jackets, or rowboat.
  • Gloves to protect your hands.
  • Net with a long handle to retrieve items from the bottom.
  • Long handle or stick with a hook on it or a nail for spearing trash or retrieving it from the bottom.
  • Heavy Duty trash bags (stronger than the average household use bags)
  • HRWC will have trash bags but if you have your own please bring them
  • Polarized sunglasses for spotting trash on the bottom.
